The Devils were in Scotland on Sunday evening for the second leg of the playoff quarterfinal against the Dundee Stars.  The Devils held a two-goal aggregate advantage after the first leg on Saturday night when they defeated the Stars 4-2 in Cardiff.

The Stars needed an early goal to get right back into this series and they got it just 3:11 into the game when Ryan Valentini set up Spencer Naas to make it 1-0.  Dundee were absolutely flying in the opening period and Ben Bowns was called upon to make some big saves early.

Jamie Arniel calmed the nerves of the Devils when he scored to tie the game at 6:09 of the first period after being set up by Justin Crandall and chipping the puck through a pile of bodies to beat Lucas Brine and make it 1-1.  A poor clearing attempt at the end of the period saw the Stars get a great scoring chance and Cody Donaghey was forced to take a penalty with 6 seconds remaining to prevent a goal. The Stars outshot the Devils 17-8 through the first 20 minutes, but the score remained tied at 1-1.

The Donaghey penalty meant the Stars would open the second period on a powerplay, but the Devils managed to kill it off.  At 27:24 The Devils had their first powerplay after Cole Ully and Xavier Pouliot were binned for fighting and the Dundee player was given an extra 2 minutes for roughing.  The Devils could not score with the man advantage and the period looked like it was going to end still tied.  In the final minute, the Devils broke into the Dundee zone and Arniel fed Bode Wilde who fired a perfect cross ice pass onto the stick of Crandall who redirected it into the net to give the Devils a 2-1 lead with 39 seconds left in the period.

Ully took a cross-checking penalty at 39:41, which meant that once again the Stars would start a period with a powerplay.  Despite being short-handed, the Devils somehow were sprung for a 2 on 1 break and Ryan Barrow dropped the puck to Arniel who fired it low between the legs for his second goal of the game and a commanding 3-1 lead at 41:27.

That goal sealed the win for the Devils, putting them up by 4 goals on the aggregate scoreline, a mountain to climb with just over 18 minutes to play, especially with how Ben Bowns was playing in the Cardiff net.  The Stars eventually got a goal back with Arniel in the penalty box for hooking, Drydn Dow scored with 1:46 remaining in the game to make it 3-2.

The Stars threw everything at the net all night long, but it wasn’t enough.  The final shot count was 52-28 in favour of the Stars, but Ben Bowns made a season high 50 saves to lead the Devils to the win.

The Devils will face the Belfast Giants next Saturday night in the Playoff Championship semi-final hosted in Nottingham.
