With the cancellation of the season, we’ve had to get creative with a way to do our annual end of season jersey auction.
The Cardiff Devils have signed defenceman Gleason Fournier who has been playing for the Alaska Aces of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) this season.
The 24 year old Fournier was a 3rd round NHL draft pick of the Detroit Red Wings in 2009 and was a member of the Calder Cup winning Grand Rapid Griffins of the American Hockey League in 2013. Last season, he was selected to play in the ECHL all-star game and scored 5 goals and 19 assists in 57 games splitting his time with the Orlando Solar Bears and the Florida Everblades.
So far this season with Alaska in 27 games, Fournier had 8 goals and 9 assists for 17 points. He plays powerplay and penalty kill for Alaska and is a big mobile defenceman who moves the puck well.
“He was playing 25+ minutes a game for his team in the ECHL and we believe he will be a top two-way defenceman in this league,” explained Andrew Lord.
“Alaska is the only rink in the ECHL that is Olympic size, which half the rinks in this league are, including our new arena.”
The Devils expect to have Fournier in the lineup for both games this coming weekend when they host the Nottingham Panthers on Saturday Night (7pm) in Cardiff and then when they head to Coventry on Sunday to face off against the Blaze.
