Ben Bowns made 19 saves and Layne Ulmer scored the game-winner to lead the Devils to victory on Friday Night.
It wasn’t easy though, after the Devils had to travel back from their match the night before in Fife to play a well rested Flames squad that came out flying from the drop of the puck.
Guildford set the pace early with two great chances that Bowns came up big on to keep the scoreline 0-0. Two powerplay chances for the Flames tested the Devils, but the penalty-killing was outstanding once again.
Some impressive forechecking by Joey Haddad and Jake Morissette led to the opening goal with Morissette finding Ulmer in front of the net to beat Travis Fullerton at 27:52.
At 31:45 Guildford’s Kevin King took 3 minor penalties all at once, 2 x 2 minutes for cross-checking plus an additional 2 minutes for abuse of official. The meant 6 minutes with the man advantage for the Devils, which eventually paid off.
At 36:52, with less than a minute left for Guildford to kill off, Gleason Fournier’s signature wrist shot from the blueline found its way through traffic and beat Fullerton to make it 2-0.
The third period saw the Devils shut down the Flames at every opportunity, limiting them to 7 shots despite them pushing hard to get back into the game.
Ben Bowns picked up his 3rd shutout in 4 games, a league-leading 6th shutout on the season but it was Matthew Myers who picked up Man of the Match for his play tonight. Myers battled all over the ice, throwing some big hits and taking a beating in front of the Flames net on the powerplay.
