It took just over 51 minutes of play before the Devils broke the deadlock and it was Bryce Reddick who got the Devils on the scoreboard first. Charles Linglet threw the puck from the left side of the ice and it deflected off Reddick past Matt Hackett at 51:01.

The goal was under review, but eventually the referee signalled a good goal and the Devils were up 1-0 with under 9 minutes to play.
Just 1:25 later, the Devils powerplay went to work with Stephen Dixon doubling the lead with a goal that was poke-checked by Hackett off Dixon then into the net past Hackett to make it 2-0 at 52:26.
