The Guildford Flames have secured top spot in their Challenge Cup group after two wins over the Devils this weekend, the second coming in a shoot-out on Sunday evening.

At one point, the Devils held a 3-1 lead but some penalty trouble let the Flames back into the game before they eventually took the extra point.

The Flames struck first just 6:42 into the game with a powerplay goal from Ian Watters. The visitors held onto the 1-0 lead into the first intermission but the middle period saw the Devils strike back.

Joey Martin tied the game up at 25:01 on the powerplay with the lone assist going to Sean McMonagle, then McMonagle scored one of his own on the powerplay at 29:10 with Martin setting him up to give the Devils a 2-1 lead.

At 36:55 the Devils doubled their lead when Mattias Sointu scored on a wraparound to make it 3-1 with Sam Duggan and Mark Louis assisting on the play.

At 38:14, Gleason Fournier was called for 4 minutes of penalties, 2 for slashing and 2 for cross-checking. On the ensuing powerplay, the Flames pulled a goal back to make it 3-2 with 4 seconds remaining in the period courtesy of Watters second goal of the game.

Guildford tied the game at 47:50 when Cam Braes sprung free down the left wing and fired the puck low past Ben Bowns to make it 3-3, which is how the third period ended.

The Devils had plenty of chances in extra time, with Joey Martin getting the best opportunity but the puck hit the post and kept the game tied after 5 minutes of sudden death overtime.
