The Devils lost a crucial battle with another title contender on Saturday night in Nottingham.
The hometown Panthers took the points in style with a 7-3 win over the visiting Devils after a flurry of third period goals that put the game out of reach.
The Devils opened the scoring when Evan Mosey’s wrist shot somehow found its way through traffic into the back of the net at 6:41. The Devils gave up a shorthanded goal to Robert Lachowicz at 17:30, which tied the game up at 1-1.
Joey Martin scored his first goal of the game on the powerplay at 21:01 to give the Devils a 2-1 lead, but two goals from Mathieu Tousignant less than a minute apart at 23:45 then 24:35 turned the momentum in favour of the Panthers who held the 3-2 after 40 minutes of play.
The league’s leading scorer Sam Herr extended the lead for the Panthers just 1:07 into the final period, then 3 minutes later Brett Perlini made it 5-2. Joey Martin scored his second of the game, another powerplay goal at 50:41 to make it 5-3, but any hope of a comeback was squashed by Perlini’s second of the game at 54:16.
Then Sam Herr scored again at 56:31 to round out the scoring and finish the game off with a 7-3 victory for the Panthers. Joey Martin finished with 2 goals and 1 assist for the Devils and Sean McMonagle picked up 2 assists.
