Wessex Garages have once again partnered with the Devils for the upcoming season
The Devils were looking to continue their excellent form at home, but the Guildford Flames had other plans on Saturday Night.
Led by an Ian Watters hat-trick, the Flames skated to a 5-3 win over the hometown Devils in front of a shocked crowd at Ice Arena Wales.
Kevin King drew first blood with a powerplay strike at 6:41 for the lone goal of the opening period.
The Flames doubled their lead at 24:08 when Watters scored his first of the night and the Flames 2ndpowerplay goal to give the visitors. 2-0 lead. Just over 2 minutes later, Watters had his team up 3-0 but the Devils pulled one back from Joey Haddad at 27:35 to breath some life into the Devils.
But with just over 2 minutes to play in the middle period, Watters completed his hat-trick, putting the Flames in front 4-1 after two periods of play.
Haddad connected with Gleason Fournier to pull a goal back for the Devils at 52:37 then the Devils had a golden opportunity to pull within a goal when the Flames were called for too many men on the ice late in the game, but their penalty killers were up to task and kept the Devils at bay.
With Ben Bowns pulled for the extra attacker, the Devils scored to make it 4-3 when Matt Pope fired a bullet along the ice through a crowd of skates with 1:09 left to play. But at 19:21 John Dunbar scored into the empty net to secure the 5-3 win for the Flames.
Bowns made 24 saves from 28 shots, Joey Haddad picked up the Man of the Match with a goal and an assist on the night, while Layne Ulmer had two assists for the Devils.
