It was the final pre-season home game for the Devils and their fine form continued on Saturday night against the Manchester Storm.
After a dominating 8-1 victory on Saturday for the Devils, this one started much the same with two goals in the opening period. Cole Sanford opened the scoring with Brendan Mikkelson and Brodie Dupont drawing assists on the first goal.
Brandon McNally was tossed out of the game early after what was deemed a check to the head, which left the Devils killing a 5-minute penalty. After a successful kill, it was the Devils who scored next. Justin Crandall extended the lead after a slick pass from Dupont, making it 2-0, which is how the period ended.
The Storm battled back in the middle period, eventually tying the game after a goal from Adam Brady and a shorthanded goal from Cam Critchlow. Trevor Cox restored the lead for the Devils late in the period, making it 3-2 after 40 minutes of play.
The lone goal of the third period came from the Storm’s captain Dallas Ehrhardt and although the Devils had a late powerplay for the final two minutes of play, they could not convert, and the game headed into overtime.
It took the Devils 15 seconds to get the winner with Brodie Reid firing a bullet over the shoulder of Matt Ginn right off the opening faceoff to give the Devils a 4-3 win.
The victory completes a pre-season sweep of wins for the Devils, with two wins over the Nottingham Panthers last weekend and then the two wins over the Storm this weekend.
The Devils play their first official domestic competitive game on Saturday September 25th against the Guildford Flames at Ice Arena Wales.
