The Cardiff Devils are pleased to confirm two more forwards for the upcoming season, one former Devil and one new face to South Wales - Tomas Kurka and Zach Hervato.
Kurka played for the Devils in 2013-14 and was targeted to return last summer but the ownership change and the uncertainty of his position with the club forced him to sign in Russia for the 2014-15 season. The former 2nd round draft pick played 17 games in the NHL with the Carolina Hurricanes before returning to Europe for the past decade where he played in top leagues in Czech Republic, Finland and Germany. Two seasons ago as a Devil, Kurka scored 26 goals and 23 assists for 49 points in 40 games.
Player Coach Andrew Lord played with Kurka in 2013-14 and had targeted his former teammate since the end of last season.
“We wanted to get another impact forward and I know what Tomas can bring to the table. He was a dominant player in this league the first time around and I expect even more of him this season.
“The thing I remember about him was that despite playing on a team that wasn’t always competing, he played intense every night. He is highly skilled and I am looking forward to getting him back with this Devils team.”
Zach Hervato joins the Devils from the Hull Stingrays where he scored 16 goals and 24 assists in 49 games last season. At 5’8”, Hervato plays with an edge and gets under the skin of opponents. His versatility and work rate caught the eye of Player/Coach Andrew Lord this season, particularly in the playoffs.
“We really had our eye on a couple of players from Hull and the more we watched them, the more we noticed Hervato. He can play every forward position and has a very solid skillset, but also has an edge to his game.
“He might be our fastest skater this season which is saying a lot about him when you think of the forwards we already have signed. His 16 goals in 49 games puts him as a 20+ goal scorer in a 60 game season.
“He is still young, this will only be his third year of pro hockey, but everything about him makes us believe he is just getting started. We think we have a real gem with Hervato and I am certain the fans are going to love the way he plays.”
