The Devils came out on the wrong side of a 4-2 game against MAC Ujbuda at Viola Arena.
The Cardiff Devils are pleased to confirm the signing of 6’5" Canadian Forward Doug Clarkson for the 2014-15 season.
Clarkson was part of the Philadelphia Flyers organisation last season, playing an exhibition game, scoring a goal and getting in a fight, before being assigned to their American League affiliate, the Adirondack Phantoms. With Adirondack he only played 5 games throughout the season as well as a brief stint with Reading Royals in the East Coast Hockey League.
Director of Hockey Operations Neil Francis spoke about Clarkson:
“His numbers are a bit deceptive because when you look at his stats from last season, you only see a handful of games played, but the reality is here is a 6’5” 235 lbs guy who is only 25 years old and was able to play in the NHL pre-season just last season.
“Sometimes you have to take a chance on a guy that you think can come in and have a major impact in this league, and with Clarkson we all believe he will be a real force for the Devils next season. He is a big body, he skates well and sticks up for his teammates.
“In our rink, someone that can crash and bang is going to be effective and I expect him to be a real fan favourite in Cardiff. I also expect him to score regularly at this level. In his last season in University he dominated scoring 17 times in 26 games. For a man of his size, he has good hands and a great shot. We have had great reviews of him from former coaches and they think this is a solid signing for the Devils, as do all of us.
Head Coach Andrew Lord added "I talked at length with Doug during our negotiations and I knew straight away that he was a guy that I want to work with. His career path so far has been a bit frustrating for him and he just wants a chance to show what he can do over a full season. Doug will surprise a few people with his overall skillset to go with his toughness and he is hungry to make sure we have a successful season."
Clarkson, who is the younger brother of NHL star David Clarkson (Toronto Maple Leafs) holds a British passport. His father was born in Edinburgh and his mother’s parents were born in Belfast so his roots run deep into this part of the world.
Clarkson will wear number 93 for the Devils next season.
Doug Clarkson takes the Cardiff Devils Roster to 13-signed players for the 2014-15 Season.
