Man of the Match

The Devils travelled to Scotland to take on the Fife Flyers on Sunday evening after a disappointing loss to the Coventry Blaze the night before.  The Flyers were full of confidence, coming off an impressive 5-1 win over the Manchester Storm on Saturday night.  Ben Bowns got the start in net for the Devils and Shane Owen took his normal spot in the Flyers net to start the game.

Joey Martin opened the scoring less than a minute into the game when he beat Owen at the 50 second mark, converting on a pass from Trevor Cox to make it 1-0.  Bowns was tested early when he was called upon to make a sprawling save on Janne Laakkonen who was all alone at the side of the goal.  At 8:44 Josh Brittain doubled the lead when he converted a pass from Sam Duggan and wired a wrist shot over the shoulder of Owen to make it 2-0.

With just under three minutes to play Martin had a chance for a second when him and Cox broke free against a lone defender, but Owen was there to make a great save and keep the score line 2-0.  Both goalies were busy in the first period with the Devils just edging the Flyers in shots on goal 17-16.

Sam Jardine was called for hooking at 22:45 to give the Flyers the first powerplay of the night, but the Devils managed to kill it off giving up only one shot while a man down.  With 5:27 remaining in the second period, Jardine was called for holding the stick and the Flyers were back on the powerplay.

Cox somehow got a short-handed breakaway, but Owen stopped it, however Fife took an interference call on the play to nullify their powerplay. Bowns was called to make a huge save on a breakaway moments later to keep the Devils lead intact.  The second period ended how it started, with the Devils leading 2-0.  The shots in the middle period were 6-5 in favour of the Flyers.

The final period saw an early goal from the Devils when Joey Martin fired a shot that missed the net but came off the end boards to Blake Thompson who hammered a slapshot past Owen to make it 3-0 at 41:50.

The Flyers came to life after that with periods of sustained pressure in the Devils zone, but they could not get anything past Bowns.  The Devils closed off the game and held onto their 3-0 lead to give Bowns his first shutout of the season.  He was the pick for Man of the Match after making 28 saves for the win.  Joey Martin and Blake Thompson both finished with a goal and an assist.
