It took over 63 minutes, but the Devils battled for the 3-2 overtime win Edinburgh on Sunday night.
The Cardiff Devils are excited to announce the final piece of their defensive unit with the signing of standout Canadian defenceman Andrew Hotham.
27 year old Hotham is a highly skilled player who was a three-time all-star, league MVP and Defenceman of the Year in the Canadian Universities league. In 2010 he played a key role in helping St Mary’s to the CIS University Cup where he was named series MVP. Hotham finished his last year of college in the American Hockey League where he registered 2 points in 6 games for Rochester Americans. In his first pro-season with Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL, he was named in the All-Rookie Team after amassing an incredible 47 points in 56 games with another 2 AHL call-ups. Following a further high scoring season spent between 30 ECHL games and 38 in the AHL, Hotham moved to the prestigious German DEL where he put up an impressive 13 points in 29 games.
Hockey runs in Hotham’s blood as his father Greg is a former NHL defenceman for Toronto and Pittsburgh and older brother Scott currently plays in Austria.
Head Coach Andrew Lord was delighted at the capture of Hotham:
“I am thrilled to have Andrew join the Cardiff Devils. He has he has all the tools to be one of the top defencemen in the league with superb vision and patience which allows him to read the game very well and make plays under pressure. He will be a huge force in creating transition from defence to offense and also on the powerplay where he has excelled in a leading role on his previous teams. In addition, Andrew is a great teammate with the right character to fit in very well with our team. We have played on three of the same teams and although we have never played together I had many recommendations from ex-teammates and coaches on what a great player and person he is. This is an amazing way to round off our D corps and I could not be happier with the group we have assembled back there.”
Director of Hockey Neil Francis added:
“Hotham has put up incredible numbers everywhere he has played but has also demonstrated that he can play responsibly and is a robust player. He has always been a key powerplay guy which is an area we are looking to improve on. You can’t help but be excited at the mix of skill and toughness we have on our back end which will make us very difficult to play against.”
