Sheffield Steelers 4 - 3 Cardiff Devils

Faceoff: 19:30 - 19/10/12

Steelers made it two wins from their opening two  Challenge Cup Group B matches with this shootout success over Devils, with Drew  Fata firing in the winning shot in round two of sudden death after each side had  scored once in the initial three rounds.

Earlier it had been Fata who opened the scoring for the  home side as they edged the first period thanks to the blueliner strike on the  powerplay only 26 seconds from the period break.

Devils came out with purpose in the second period and  scored twice early to move the momentum in their direction. First on the mark  was Ben Davies at 22.01 and then Tyson Marsh edged his side ahead at 25.24. Back  came Steelers and Shawn Limpright tied it up at 29.51 and Steven Goertzen fired  in at 31.17 as the home side reclaimed their advantage.

Devils pressed their hosts in the third period and had  slightly more of the play. This finally paid off when skipper Stuart Macrae made  it 3-3 at 54.00 and was enough to see the sides go to overtime with neither able  to find a regulation winner.

An end to end overtime period produced several chances  at either end but no winning strike, leaving it all to Fata to give Steelers the  extra point in the end.
