Sheffield Steelers 2 - 4 Cardiff Devils
Faceoff: 19:00 - 08/09/12
Cardiff Devils got their league campaign off to the perfect start with a stunning away win in Sheffield. Cardiff had twice in the last four season lost their opening fixture away to Sheffield, but this time Max Birbraer gave them the ideal early lead when he converted Chris Blight’s cross-ice pass in the 8th minute.
The Devils held that lead to the break, but in the second period a series of penalties against them gave Sheffield a 5-on-3 powerplay. Despite a series of quality saves from Phil Osaer it was only a matter of time before the extra men told and Drew Fata equalised for the Steelers after 24 minutes.
Cardiff continued to run into penalty trouble and although they managed to this time kill another 5-on-3, Lee Esders scored shortly after to give the home side the lead after two periods.
The game continued to move quickly from end to end at the start of the third period and this time it was the turn of Sheffield to give away a penalty. Cardiff did not waste the powerplay opportunity and at 47:28 Phil Hill equalised for the Devils.
With the game finely poised going into the final ten minutes, it was the Devils who made the breakthrough. Captain Stuart MacRae scoring with less than seven minutes to go with assists from Devin Didiomete and Tyson Marsh.
Sheffield charged forward looking for an equaliser but with 90 seconds remaining Ben Davies scored a fourth goal to seal a sensational win for Cardiff.
