Steelers bounced back from their blanking at the hands of Nottingham Panthers last night to produce a display good enough to take two Challenge Cup points from Devils at Ice Sheffield to keep their hopes in the competition still alive.
It was certainly a dominant night for special teams with no fewer than five powerplay goals and one of the shorthanded variety included in the eight scored.
Devils were first to strike when Max Birbraer scored on the powerplay at 4.12 but also on the powerplay, Steelers levelled at 6.49 thanks to Jeff Legue. A third powerplay goal of the period split the teams when at 14.11 Colt King was on hand to shoot the home side ahead.
Steelers went two goals ahead at 24.33 with a counter from Lee Esders before Scott Dobben reduced the deficit at 32.36 on the powerplay. Shorthanded, Legue made it 4-2 at 37.28 but on the same play Devils powerplay counted their third of the night with Brad Voth on target at 38.48.
Devils had more of the play in the third period but could find no way through the home defence and the scoring was rounded off at 58.21 when King picked up his second of the night to ice the Challenge Cup points for Ryan Finnerty's men.
