Cardiff Devils 3 - 4 Sheffield Steelers

Faceoff: 18:00 - 09/09/12

A Mac Faulkner inspired Cardiff Devils side fought back from two goals down to take the game into extra time, only to lose out on the lottery of a penalty shoot out.

Faulkners first goal midway through the first period gave the Devils a deserved lead, but two goals either side of the first period break gave the Steelers the lead.

With the state of the ice getting worse the more the game went on, it was Sheffield who adapted the better and a Jonathon Phillips goal early in the third period looked to have sealed a comfortable win for the away side.

But Mac Faulkner led the fight back for Cardiff, scoring a quick wrap around goal to cut the defecit before pouncing quickest on the loose puck to tie the game and complete his hat-trick with 8 minutes to go.

Cardiff looked the most likely to score a winner whilst Sheffield looked happy to kill time and take the game into overtime.

In the end it was to be decided to by penalty shots. After all three scorers for both teams had failed to score, Colin Shields beat Phil Osaer only for Faulkner to do the same. Up stepped Cory Pecker who beat Osaer with a bullet into the top corner, and although Jamie Milam appeared to out-deke De Caro his backhand flick went agonisingly wide to seal the two poinst for Sheffield.
