Cardiff Devils 10 - 4 Edinburgh Capitals

Faceoff: 19:30 - 15/03/12

Sorry Capitals will be making the long journey back to Edinburgh with their Play-off hopes now very much in the balance as their midweek sojourn to England and Wales saw double defeat – with tonight’s reverse against Devils a real hammering as Gerad Adams’ side hit double figures.

A hat trick for Devils blueliner Jamie Vanderveeken led the way with Capitals gaining only a consolation by winning the third period after being 10-1 down after forty minutes.

Devils wasted little time is taking charge of this one with player/coach Adams firing them ahead after only 76 seconds. Capitals held on against a home onslaught but conceded again at 11.30 as Scott Dobben scored on the powerplay. Vanderveeken then scored his first of the night shorthanded at 63 and Devils led 3-0 at the first period break.

The second session can only be described as a horror show for Capitals as Devils hit seven straight. Vanderveeken on the powerplay at 23.28 started the rout and as Capitals completely caved in there were further strikes by Stuart Macrae at 25.54 (seeing Craig Holland replace Nathan Craze in the Capitals net), Vanderveeken’s hat trick goal at 29.23 on the powerplay, Ben Davies 30 seconds later, Macrae again shorthanded at 31.16.Jeff Pierce on the powerplay at 36.22 and again shorthanded at 38.33, before Thomas Valecko got the visitors on the board with 6 seconds of the period remaining.

The third period started with Joe Myers in the Devils net in place of Stevie Lyle and Nathan Craze back between the Capitals pipes once again and it was a period where Capitals at least restored some face, scoring three times without reply to add some respectability to the final outcome. Goals by Sean Menton at 41.09, Rene Jarolin at 43.40 on the powerplay and Martin Petrina at 51.35 all counted for the visitors but in the end it was a very easy win for Devils as they build confidence levels for their own Play-Off push.
