Cardiff Devils 1 - 4 Nottingham Panthers
Faceoff: 18:00 - 08/01/12
Cardiff Devils couldn’t make it a perfect weekend as they lost out to Nottingham Panthers in another closely fought game.
After their fantastic victory the previous night despite finishing with just 6 imports, the Devils welcomed back Scott Matzka following the birth of his son whilst Gerad Adams had recovered from the injury he had sustained in Nottingham.
In a fast and physical first period, Nottingham opened the scoring after 6 minutes on the powerplay. Brandon Benedict was left alone in front of the net and he took his time to fire past Lyle.
Cardiff came close to scoring several times before they equalised on a powerplay of their own. Jamie Vanderveeken’s shot deflected off Lepine into Phil Hill’s path and he one-timed it past Kowalski to tie the game.
Both teams had chances to take the lead in the second period only to be denied by a series of stunning saves by both netminders.
The longer the game went on though the more the short-benched Devils started to tire. With ten minutes remaining, Jordan Fox’s shot was saved by Lyle but the rebound fell kindly for Beauregard to score.
Cardiff did get a chance to find another equaliser when they had a powerplay with three minutes remaining, but when Matt Myers stole the puck he brokeaway before flicking the puck past Lyle and into the net for a short-handed goal.
In the final minute the Devils pulled Lyle for the extra skater, only for Nottingham to break away and score a 4th into the empty net thanks to Myers’ second goal of the game for a 4-1 final scoreline.
