Cardiff Devils 3 - 4 Nottingham Panthers

Faceoff: 19:30 - 30/11/11

Cardiff Devils picked up a point for the 11th game in the row but once again failed to get the win in overtime.
The home side had raced into a 2-0 lead in a frantic opening nine minutes. Phil Hill opened the scoring after six minutes when a scramble in front of the net saw the puck bounce back out to him and he fired it over the sprawling Craig Kowalski. Two minutes later the Devils were presented with a 5 on 3 powerplay, and although the Panthers managed to kill the first penalty, another scramble in the crease saw Scott Matzka force the puck over the line.
That goal woke Nottingham up, and they hit back within a matter of seconds. Despite losing the face off, Jordan Fox won the puck back and when it was worked back to Danny Meyers he had time to pick his spot in the top corner of the net.
With the pace of the first period not letting up, it was the Panthers’ turn to take advantage of a 5 on 3 powerplay. When Corey Neilson collected the puck on the blueline he fired in a slapshot that flew low into the corner of the net.
Nottingham remained on the powerplay, and a quick passing move involving Fox and Scott Champagne saw Jeff Heerema fire past Lyle to give the Panthers the lead at the first period break.
Nottingham started the second period at the same pace they had finished the first, pinning the Devils back into their zone for long periods. It looked like it would be only a matter of time before Nottingham extended their lead until a bit of magic from Ben Davies got the Devils back on level terms. Picking up the puck in his own zone, Davies weaved himself in and out of the Nottingham defence the length of the ice and after setting up Scott Dobben, got himself in front of the net to knock in the rebound.
The goal swung the game back in the favour of Cardiff, who went looking for a winner only to be denied time and time again by Craig Kowalski.
In the end the game was to go to overtime, and within 31 seconds Matt Francis had opened up the Cardiff defence with a great bit of skill and he fired past Lyle to give Nottingham the overtime win.
