Cardiff Devils Celebrate League Title on Sunday night

The Devils won it the night before in Sheffield, but they had to wait 24 hours to get their hands on the Elite League Trophy on Sunday Night.

There was still a game to play against the Fife Flyers before the celebrations got underway but for a fanbase that has waited 20 years to celebrate a league championship, they could keep the champagne on ice for another couple of hours.

The Devils started Thomas Murdy in net, and he was outstanding, stopping 30 of the 31 shots he faced to lead the Devils to the win.

The only goal of the first period came from Patrick Asselin at 17:41 from Layne Ulmer to give the Devils the lead after 20 minutes.

Joey Haddad scored on the power play at 23:01 to double the Devils lead, then Chris Culligan tapped in a perfect pass from Guillaume Doucet at 34:55 to make it 3-0 after two periods of action.

The Flyers broke the shutout for Murdy just 50 seconds into the final period, but 3 more goals from the Devils sealed the win.  First Andrew Hotham scored at 42:44, then his brother scored on the power play at 44:41 to make it 5-1.  Layne Ulmer rounded out the scoring at 48:16 giving the Devils the 6-1 lead, which they held until the final buzzer.

Then the celebrations began with the trophy presented by Neil Francis, the longtime servant to the Devils as a player, coach, director of hockey operations and the man that enticed the new ownership to Cardiff 3 years ago.  In the words of Managing Director Todd Kelman “There was no other person that was going to present that trophy to this team.  He engineered all of this…”  The crowd erupted when Captain Jake Morissette accepted the trophy from Francis and the party began.

The Devils players took it up to the bar, still in their kit and celebrated with the fans.  An epic night for everyone involved with the club and the second major championship of an historic season so far.
