The Devils jumped into a tie for first place with the Nottingham Panthers after beating them on Saturday Night in front of nearly 6,000 people at Motorpoint Arena, Nottingham.
Sheffield score in 94th minute to win final trophy of the season.
A near perfect opening period saw the Devils lead 3-1 after 20 minutes, courtesy of goals from Guillaume Doucet, Joey Haddad and Joey Martin. The Steelers lone goal came from John Armstrong.
The middle period was all Sheffield as they scored 4 times to lead 5-4 after 40 minutes. First Geoff Walker then Colton Fretter then a powerplay goal from Levi Nelson saw the Steelers take a 4-3 lead before Layne Ulmer tied the game 4-4 at 32:20. The Steelers took a 5-4 lead late in the period when Geoff Walker scored his second of the game at 37:23.
The third period saw an early goal from Andrew Hotham to tie the game 5-5 just 54 seconds into the third period, but that would be the only goal of the final period to set up overtime.
Into the first overtime and the teams traded chances, but Ben Bowns was on top form to deny two point blank chances for the Steelers. But after another 20 minutes of play, the score remained tied, which meant a fifth period of hockey to decide this one.
The Devils had a great chance early into the 2nd overtime period, but Ervins Mustukovs made a huge save on Patrick Asselin to keep this game going. At 94:08, Levi Nelson scored the goal to end the game and the Grand Slam hopes of the Cardiff Devils and in doing so, sent his team and fanbase into hysterics as the Steelers became the Playoff Champions of 2017.
