The Devils suffered their third defeat in this year’s Champions League campaign and their second at the hands of Red Bull Salzburg.
The home side opened the scoring just 16 seconds after the Devils killed off a Red Bull powerplay but Salzburg kept control of the puck and found a way past Ben Bowns at 5:48 courtesy of Mario Huber.
They doubled their lead at 14:58 when Christopher Vandevelde made it 2-0 with John Hughes and Brent Regner assisting on the goal. The period ended with the Devils trailing 2-0 and looking for an answer to the Red Bull’s energy on the ice.
A 4 minute penalty for elbowing on Ben Blood gave Salzburg a lengthy powerplay and they took full advantage, scoring their third of the night at 25:35 from Brant Harris. Another powerplay goal 4 minutes later, this time from Raphael Herburger, put Salzburg up 4-0 midway through the game.
The Devils finally got one back when Mike Hedden picked up a loose puck and tucked it past Lukas Herzog in the Red Bull goal at 34:50 to make it 4-1, which is how the second period ended.
The lone goal of the final period came on a Devils powerplay when Layne Ulmer tipped in a shot from Matt Pope to pull the Devils within two and make it 4-2 at 45:35. Despite pressing for a third goal, it never came for the Devils and the game finished with Salzburg taking the win on home ice.
