Mark Smith returns to the Cardiff Devils defence for a second year after an impressive debut season.

After making the move last summer from EIHL rivals the Edinburgh Capitals, Mark recieved glowing praise from their fans who rated him as their best defenceman. It didn't take the Cardiff fans long to see why, as Mark's incredible workrate and willingness to block shots with his body made it tough for opponents to get close to the Cardiff net.

Neil Francis:

We knew Mark was going to be good for us last season but until you watch him week in, week out, you don't realise exactly how much he gives you.

It's ridiculous the amount of shots he blocks with all parts of his body and I've never seen so many cuts and bruises literally from head to toe. He is also horrible to play against with his battling abilities along the boards and is happy to get quick passes up to the forwards to let them do their job.

He was recognised at the end of season awards with the Unsung Hero award and I can't think of a more appropriate title for him.
